Hi everyone! This year I am very busy. I am a postgraduate student at the Bialystok University of Technology. In my free time, I try to develop my skills and learn new things. I also go to meetups. It is a great opportunity to learn and leave the house – it is a nice change when you work remotely.

Recently, I attended the PyStok #77 meeting in Bialystok. This is a meetup for Python fans. On a daily basis, I choose Java, but I like to learn about other technologies. It is good to know what is happening in the industry. Also, Python is a very important part of my Data Science studies.

There were two very interesting presentations at the meeting.

1. Does Python have to be slow?

The first speaker was Sebastian Buczyński. He is a very experienced architect. He talked about app optimization in Python. Sebastian showed that many myths about Python’s performance are not true.

He presented hard data and facts. I really liked what he said about being an engineer. Our job is about making constant decisions. We must balance project requirements and technology. It was a lesson not only about Python but about good programming in general. The talk was both serious and funny at the same time.

2. Math that earns money

The second presentation was by Kamil Zabielski. Kamil is a mathematician and a security expert. He talked about survival analysis.

It sounds complicated, but the examples were great. I learned what Netflix subscriptions have in common with clinical trials. Kamil showed how statistical models help in business and medicine. The whole case study used clinical data and the Python language. It is amazing how mathematics helps with real-life decisions.

Why is it worth being there?

Every day I work with Java, hexagonal architecture, and many microservices. However, these events give me a new perspective and help me enter the world of Python. The atmosphere at PyStok is great. You can talk to people with huge knowledge, drink a beer, and have a good time.

Bialystok has a really strong IT community. If you study or work here as a programmer, you should definitely visit these events. I will certainly come back for the next edition!
